Humans

They are an unassuming species: no identifiable home world, no unified government, no prominent technologies or exports. No grand battles or accomplishments. A history of diaspora, with a hint of grand mystery to their origin. Most empires and governments take little note of them, classifying them simply as refugees, travelers, or ‘other.’

They call themselves Humans.

Their own mythology is inconsistent regarding their origin - described as either a backwater intrasystem collection of warring nation-states, or a mighty empire pre-dating even the Galactic Convergence - but there are some commonalities to how they came to be in the modern day: seven cryogenic status ships, launched into the void, aiming to establish colony worlds. Five of them lost outright, never to be heard from again. A sixth disappeared, itself the subject of strange tales and legends. The seventh, the Exodus, was a survivor, left adrift for a near-eternity, before being awoken in the modern day.

Without an established home world, amidst the turbulence of an already populated galaxy, humanity would spread out amongst the stars. Within a century small pockets of their kind could be found in colonies, ghettos, and work camps far and wide. Lone individuals worked odd jobs, blending into the population and adding to the genetic mix of civilization. Sometimes welcomed, sometimes derided, usually seen as a source of cheap labor, human-kind has largely faded into the background of history.

Human physiology is not notably different from other anthropoid species; in fact they lack some of the enhanced senses of specialized organs found in others. They are unremarkable and plain, but with intellectual and emotional capabilities comparable to most advanced species. That similarity has allowed them to blend in with minimal effort.

Some anthropologists - and a few cults - are of the belief that humanity’s genes are forerunners to the rest of the galaxy’s life, on account of their compatibility and similarity. It is a striking connection, but is unsupported by any particular evidence - while their creation myths put their origins as coming before even the Precursors, the likelihood of their continued existence across such an immense span of time seems utterly impossible.

In any case, humanity is definitely a relic species, making them a curiosity for study.
